A Canvas of Fierce Vitality
Flourishing in the late 17th and 18th centuries, the Basohli school of Pahari miniature painting is globally celebrated for its bold use of color, intense facial expressions, and distinctive features like prominent noses and lotus-shaped eyes.
Often depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata, these paintings are not just art—they are visual stories of a rich cultural past.
Geographical Indication (GI) Tag: In March 2023, Basohli Paintings were granted a GI tag, legally protecting this historic craft from unauthorized duplication and ensuring its legacy is preserved by the true artisans of the region.
The Warmth of a Century
Complementing its artistic heritage, the Kathua district is home to the traditional craft of Basohli Pashmina. With over a century of history, this hand-spun marvel is created from the downy undercoat of the Changthangi mountain goat.
Known for its extreme softness, light-weight fineness, and unparalleled insulating properties, every Basohli Pashmina shawl and stole represents hours of meticulous, intergenerational craftsmanship.
Geographical Indication (GI) Tag: Shortly after the paintings, Basohli Pashmina also earned its rightful GI tag. This recognizes the unique geographical qualities of the craft and empowers the local weavers who keep this more than 100-year-old tradition alive.
